A Level Film Studies
Our curriculum vision
The A Level Film Studies curriculum explores and highlights the transformative power of cinema. Through critical engagement with a diverse range of films, students explore how this unique and enjoyable art form reflects and shapes culture, identity, and society. Our curriculum aims to develop critical thinkers, able to deconstruct film language, narrative, and ideology. We hope to create culturally literate student who develop an understanding of national, global, historical, and political contexts. And finally, allow students to be creatively empowered, equipped to express themselves through their own filmmaking and screenwriting.
A Level Film Studies
By the time students get to KS5, students can choose Film Studies A Level for their studies. Our students study the Eduqas specification for Film Studies allowing our students to explore a range of film genres, styles and directors such American Film, British Film and Documentary. Throughout this course students will learn the core components and elements that construct and create films. The view and perspective of the spectator is also explored, as Film is full of meanings and open to interpretations. Students will explore the role and meaning of representations, the style and signatures of key directors and the way films construct and imbed ideologies.
The A Level Film Studies course explores and highlights the importance of historical, political and social contexts to give insight into the creation of film texts. The film texts range from silent cinema to more modern cinema.
The A Level course also gives the opportunity for students to create their own film productions products through Non-Exam Assessment worth 30% of the overall grade. This is based on a brief that is provided by the exam board, where students can create a screenplay with storyboard or a short film!
