“A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.” Nelson Mandela
Media Studies
Our curriculum vision
TMedia Studies is an opportunity for students to explore the meanings, connotations, and constructions behind the media, and to have clear knowledge of popular culture in order to understand how the media can shape and influence society. We intend to create keen, critical consumers who can convey coherent and concise opinions and interpretations. Through analysis, evaluation and production students can grow to be thoughtful and knowledgeable by widening their cultural capital, becoming fully aware of their function as consumers and producers in our modern 21st Century society.
GCSE Media Studies
By the time students get to KS4, students can choose Media Studies at GCSE. Our students study the Eduqas specification for Media Studies allowing our students to study a range of topics such advertising, newspapers, and radio. Throughout this course students will learn how the media constructs and manipulates its audience for an intended effect. Students will study the understanding of the media industry and how it produces for intended targeted audiences. You will explore the role and meaning of representations by considering how they are constructed and manipulated for particular purpose based on gender, age, and social class across a variety of media texts.
The GCSE course explores and highlights the importance of historical and social contexts of media products to give insight into the creation of media products. You are also able to demonstrate the ability to compare media texts based on the past and contemporary contexts.
The GCSE course also gives the opportunity for students to create their own media products through Non-Exam Assessment worth 30% of the overall grade. This is based on a brief that is provided by the exam board that gives many options for production – you could create a DVD cover; a film poster; even a music video!
We encourage the development of perceptive students, who are able to fully explain and justify their ideas; students who are aware of the multiple polysemic meanings that media products contain.
