Our curriculum vision

At Harlington, A Level Design and Technology equips students with in-depth knowledge of materials, processes, and design methods—from testing materials and exploring performance characteristics to mastering tools, manufacturing techniques, and digital design. The course covers critical analysis, responsible and sustainable design, industrial practices, product lifecycle, and project management. Through hands-on experience and research, students develop practical skills and creative confidence to innovate, solve complex problems, and understand the wider social and cultural impacts of design.

Our A Level Design and Technology

A Level Design and Technology builds on the skills and knowledge students develop at GCSE, challenging them to combine creativity with practical expertise to solve real-world problems. Students explore a wide range of materials, manufacturing processes, and design principles, developing their ability to innovate and create functional, sustainable products. The course fosters critical thinking, research, and hands-on learning, preparing students for further study or careers in design, engineering, and related fields. Over two years, students develop practical and creative skills by exploring a wide range of materials such as paper, wood, metals, polymers, elastomers, and composites.

In Year 12, they learn about material properties, testing, and manufacturing techniques, alongside design methods and the impact of technology and culture on design. Students gain experience with tools, responsible and sustainable design, and digital technologies like CAD/CAM.

In Year 13, students deepen their knowledge of advanced materials and manufacturing processes, focusing on product development, intellectual property, marketing, and modern industrial practices. They conduct detailed product investigations and prepare thoroughly for final projects and exams. Throughout the course, students balance practical work with research and critical thinking, developing the skills needed to innovate and solve real-world problems.
