“The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.”
Malcolm X
Our curriculum vision
Our A Level Media Studies curriculum empowers students to become critical consumers and confident creators in a media-saturated world. In a society shaped by technological change and evolving cultural narratives, we believe Media Studies is not just relevant — it is essential. Through analytical depth, creative practice and application of knowledge students engage in a vivid and diverse range of media forms, exploring how meaning is constructed and how media influences identity, power, and perception.
A Level Media Studies
Students who opt to study A Level Media Studies will follow the Eduqas specification (same as the GCSE). Throughout the 2-year course students will study a range of media theories and concepts over a variety of media platforms that link specifically to exam focused texts such as music videos, advertising and the film industry. This course will require further independent reading and work on a variety of theories and debates, such as gender issues, structuralism, post-modernism and representations and apply them to the set media texts studied. The A Level course allows for further exploration of key concepts previously studied at GCSE and further highlights the importance of historical and social to highlight the ideologies and beliefs.
The A Level course also gives the opportunity for students to create their own cross-media products through Non-Exam Assessment worth 30% of the overall grade. This is based on a brief that is provided by the exam board that gives many options for production – you could create a DVD cover and a film poster along with a trailer or opening sequence.
We encourage the development and growth of perceptive students, who can fully explain, justify and challenge ideas; students who are aware of the multiple polysemic meanings that media products contain.
